TWGHs Mrs. Wu York Yu Memorial College won the championship in the senior group section in an urban design competition organized by the Department of Building and Construction, the City University of Hong Kong held from October 2007 to February 2008. The Competition, sponsored by the Quality Education Fund, aims to promote students' awareness and understanding on urban living and encourage them to develop mastery of cross-disciplinary thinking in the built environment. The judges of the Competition have all agreed that the proposal "Plan for a better community: Living with harmony in North Kwai Chung" made by TWGHs Mrs. Wu York Yu Memorial College is a thorough analysis on the problems in North Kwai Chung district, and has considered the needs of people from all walks of life as well as the environment.
TWGHs Leo Tung-hai LEE Primary School and TWGHs Ko Teck Kin Memorial Kindergarten won the championship in the junior primary school section and the kindergarten section respectively in the Story-telling Competition on "Healthy Wetlands, Healthy People", which was co-organized by the Hong Kong Wetland Park of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, and the Hong Kong Council of Early Childhood Education & Services. Working on the theme of the World Wetlands Day 2008 - "Healthy Wetlands, Healthy People", pupils from both schools have found their new ways to tell stories utilizing their knowledge on environmental conservation, and thus acquired a better understanding on the relationship between wetlands and health of mankind.
Tung Wah strives to convey green messages to the young generation. Many of the Group's secondary, primary schools and kindergartens have been implementing green education under the formal curriculum, besides joining schemes like the Green School Subsidy Scheme organized by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Student Environmental Protection Ambassador Scheme organized by the Environmental Campaign Committee, and the Waste Separation Pilot Programme organized by the Environmental Protection Department. Some schools have been granted "Hong Kong Green School Award" by the Environmental Campaign Committee. Schools being granted the award in 2008 include TWGHs Sun Hoi Directors' College, TWGHs Kwok Yat Wai College and TWGHs Lui Yun Choy Memorial College . Furthermore, some schools such as TWGHs Li Ka Shing College and TWGHs Wong Yee Jar Jat Memorial Primary School have been composting food waste to provide organic fertilizer for schools. Besides learning the various ways of composting soil fertilizer, students' awareness on environmental protection was greatly enhanced.
TWGHs Li Ka Shing College and TWGHs Yow Kam Yuen College have participated in Hong Kong Technology & Renewable Energy Events, enriching students' knowledge on building models and green energy like using the technology of solar energy and renewable energy. TWGHs Yow Kam Yuen College came second and third in the 7th Creative Eco-model Tournament besides participating in the Student Environmental Protection Ambassador Scheme, Green Carnival and Environmental Resources Quiz Competition. The school and TWGHs Kap Yan Directors' College also organized environmental learning activities for their students in Guangzhou , while TWGHs C.Y. Ma Memorial College organized an environmental study tour to Taiwan for widening students' horizon.
Most of Tung Wah secondary, primary schools, kindergartens and special schools have already built gardens on their school premises. Students also participated in the "One Person, One Flower Scheme" organized by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department to promote green culture. Furthermore, students of TWGHs Kwan Fong Kai Chi School and TWGHs Li Ka Shing College have won numerous awards in the competitions organized by "Hong Kong Flower Show" (2008/2009) and “The North District Flower Bird Insect & Fish Show” (2009/2010) respectively. Organic farming classes were established in some of the schools and students were arranged to join the Organic Ambassador Scheme organized by Hong Kong Organic Resource Centre. TWGHs Wong Fut Nam College won Outstanding Organic A mbassador A ward in “HSBC Organic Seedling Programme” cum “Organic A mbassador Programme” (2009/2010) organized by the Centre.
Nursery schools of Tung Wah had also been actively promoting green education and the Green Kids Ambassadors Scheme was organized for children with environmental group activities and workshops on making handicrafts with recyclable materials to enhance their awareness and sense of responsibility on environmental protection.
To reduce the use of disposable containers and help reduce food waste, TWGHs Kwan Fong Kai Chi School has adopted central portioning in the distribution of lunch since 2009/2010 while TWGHs Hok Shan School has currently applied to the Environment and Conservation Fund for subsidizing renovation works so as to implement central portioning. Besides, some schools of Tung Wah have signed the Green Lunch Charter. |
