TWGHs Centre of Integrated Health Management

Introduction

To arouse the public’s awareness of the concept of Chinese preventive medicine, TWGHs Centre of Integrated Health Management was established in early March 2009 to provide a pioneering health management service in Hong Kong. The new centre offers high-quality, personalised, systematic and comprehensive integrated Chinese and Western therapeutic solutions to the public. Centre of Integrated Health Management is currently providing services to the public through its outpatient clinics – “Body Constitution Analysis”, “Simple Obesity”, “Functional Dyspepsia”, “Neck & Back Pain”, “Chronic Fatigue”, “Insomnia” and “Allergic Rhinitis”. The Centre aims at encouraging citizens to cultivate health when they are free from illness, to take early intervention in order to prevent disease from worsening, and to avoid relapse.

Why is Health Management so Important?

The concept of health management is a core subject in Chinese Medicine philosophy. It emphasises prevention of illness, aiming to achieve better quality of life by maintaining good health, lowering the occurrence of disease, delaying illness or prolonging lifespan despite being ill.
Without apparent disease does not mean health. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. When one experiences malaise and feels his / her spirit and adaptability declining, but no actual disease is detected, he / she is in a status of sub-health. Persistent sub-health condition can lead to illness.

  • The problem of sub-health is often neglected, as it does not entail apparent disease
  • Sub-health condition may lead to illness
  • People in sub-health condition are mainly middle-agers; they make up about 70% of the total population of China
  • A large proportion of Hong Kong citizens are in sub-health status, due to stressful life, unbalanced diet and long working hours
