The newly inaugurated Board of Directors of Tung Wah will continue to uphold the Group’s charitable spirit and enhance the well being of the community

The Tung Wah Group of Hospitals is Hong Kong’s longest standing charitable organization providing the diversified services. In the past 142 years, Tung Wah has been all along upholding its mission “To heal the sick and to relieve the distressed; to care for the elderly and to rehabilitate the disabled; to promote education and to nurture youngsters; and to raise the infants and to guide the children.” The Inauguration of the Board 2012/2013 is held on 2 April 2012 and is officiated by Mr. TSANG Tak-sing, GBS, JP, Secretary for Home Affairs.

As suggested by Mrs. CHAN MAN Yee Wai, Viola, Chairman of the Board 2012/2013 in the inauguration, the services provided by Tung Wah and its work have become part of the life of every people in Hong Kong. Tung Wah has mapped out a series of work plans for the enhancement and expansion of the Group’s services to cope with the needs of the community. In addition, cost-effectiveness and efficiency will also be enhanced to monitor the Group’s huge operations.

On the basis of the provision of our century-old free medical services for the needy, Tung Wah Board has allocated $152 million to our hospitals and medical and health services centres for the provision of the Group’s free medical services, undertaking of capital projects, expansion and improvement of existing services and acquisition of sophisticated medical equipment. The Group is planning to expand the breast cancer screening services at our Well Women Clinics. A PACS system will also be installed to keep all the radiological images of our medical and health services centres. Moreover, further steps will also be taken to enhance our integrative Chinese and Western medicine treatment services which include the establishment of a Chinese medicine infertility clinic and exploring the feasibility of setting up an integrative stroke rehabilitation ward at Tung Wah Hospital as well as the possibility of launching private assisted reproduction services.

The redevelopment of Kwong Wah Hospital has aroused the attention of both the Group and general public. Provision has been made in the 2012/2013 Budget of the Government for the redevelopment project. The preparatory works of the project have largely been completed. Upon completion, the redeveloped hospital will feature new service initiatives including the launching of non-radiation oncology service, the establishment of a comprehensive ambulatory care centre as well as the provision of designated floors for the operation of Chinese medicine and integrated Chinese and Western medicine services, and integrated Chinese and Western medicine wards.

Embracing a passion for promoting education and nurturing youngsters, efforts will be focused on strengthening the teaching and learning in schools to nurture the next generation for the future of the society. The Board has reserved $57 million in promoting education services. Environmental education, health education and civic education will be promoted at our schools through an integrated curriculum framework, and conferences and workshops will also continue to be organized to strengthen our support for dyslexic students and their parents. Strenuous efforts are being made to set up our first TWGHs Wong Yee Jar Jat Memorial Talent Education Services Centre in one of our primary schools catering for those students in need of counselling service and artistic development. Moreover, Tung Wah College is offering a 2-year Higher Diploma programme in Nursing in response to the great demand for the professional training of nurses, and will further work on its planning to offer programmes in social science as well as health and medical sciences with a view to launching 5 more programmes in the year 2012/2013. Meanwhile, the majors for the Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours) programme will also be increased from 3 to 4. The College will continue to develop and launch programmes of other disciplines.

Tung Wah will undertake various welfare services in support of the government policies to help different target groups. The Group will set up its 4th Integrated Centre on Smoking Cessation in Sheung Shui in accord with the government’s anti-smoking policy to help smokers quit smoking and adopt a healthy life style. With a view to further strengthening our services for the mentally handicapped, the Group will set up its first subvented special child care centre cum early education and training centre, Tin Ching Child Development Centre, at Tin Shui Wai. The Group is also extending services into different districts to meet the needs of the local community. The services include increasing the service capacity of community haemodialysis services, providing outreach dental service for the institutionalized elderly and launching early intervention and community support services for demented elders, etc. Moreover, The Centre of Life Enlightening will be set up at Wanchai to provide funeral and supportive services for the elders and their families. Tung Wah will continue to provide training and employment opportunities for the disadvantaged groups to help them achieve self-reliance. The “i’mperfect”Art Development Project and a scholarship will also be organized for people with disabilities to unveil their artistic talents. The Group in respect of countering poverty, the Hope Development Accounts, will be extended to the Shamshuipo, Tai Kok Tsui, Shatin and Tin Shui Wai Districts. Besides, the 3rd phase of Child Development Fund will be launched and hot-meal service and a community canteen will be set up.

Mrs. CHAN MAN Yee Wai, Viola, Chairman, states that Tung Wah will devote effort in upholding corporate social responsibility, launching Green projects and promoting the preservation of the heritage of Hong Kong as well as publicizing the Group’s charitable spirit. The Board promises to sustain the solid foundation laid by the predecessors and to fulfill the lofty mission of Tung Wah in serving the underprivileged and in enhancing the well being of the community.

Since its establishment in 1870, Tung Wah has been all along upholding its mission “To heal the sick and to relieve the distressed; to care for the elderly and to rehabilitate the disabled; to promote education and to nurture youngsters; and to raise the infants and to guide the children.” Nowadays, Tung Wah has become the largest charitable organization in Hong Kong. For over a hundred years, Tung Wah’s medical and health, education and community services have developed rapidly to fulfill the needs of the society and to provide high quality services at low rates. Today, Tung Wah operates over 247 services centres, including 5 hospitals and 25 health services and Chinese medicine services centres, 51 education services centres, 165 community services centres that cover elderly, youth and family, rehabilitation and traditional services, whilst the Tung Wah Museum strives to promote, restore and preserve the heritage and relics of Tung Wah.
