Inauguration Ceremony of TWGHs Board of Directors 2019/2020
Upholding TWGHs’ mission to serve the community

Serving Hong Kong for more than a century, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs) has been striving to provide quality services, which has evolved with time to meet the ever-changing needs of the society. The Group has been all along upholding its mission ‘To heal the sick and to relieve the distressed; to care for the elderly and to rehabilitate the disabled; to promote education and to nurture youngsters; and to raise the infants and to guide the children’. The Inauguration Ceremony of the TWGHs Board of Directors 2019/2020 was held at the Assembly Hall of Tung Wah Hospital on 3 April 2019, with the Hon. LAU Kong Wah, JP, Secretary for Home Affairs officiating at the Ceremony.

The Hon. LAU Kong Wah, JP, Secretary for Home Affairs, presented testimonials to the retiring Board Members and Advisers. He also administered the oath of the 2019/2020 Board Members include Dr. TSOI Wing Sing, Ken, the Chairman, Ms. Ginny MAN, the 1st Vice-Chairman, Mr. TAM Chun Kwok, Kazaf, the 2nd Vice-Chairman, Mr. MA Ching Yeung, Philip, the 3rd Vice-Chairman, Mr. WAI Ho Man, Herman, the 4th Vice-Chairman, Ms. TANG Ming Wai, Mandy, the 5th Vice-Chairman, as well as Mr. HO Yau Kai, Orlando, Mr. Derrick FUNG, Ms. YAN Zi, Mr. MO Yu Fung, Billy, Mr. LEE Chak Hol, Michael, Mr. TSENG Hing Fai, Felix, Mrs. CHEN YAO Li Ni, Lily, Ms. LUK Ching, Sanna, Mr. LIU Chun Fai, Kenneth, Ms. TANG Wai Man, Vivian, Mrs. NG CHENG Tsz Ting, Emmi, Mrs. Natalie CHAN CHU, Dr. CHUANG Tze Cheung, Christopher and Mr. LEE Ching Yiu, the Directors.

Speaking at the Ceremony today, Dr. TSOI Wing Sing, Ken, the Chairman said that at present, the total number of service centres has increased to 339 with a total recurrent expenditure including hospital services, exceeding $9.5 billion in the coming year. With an aim of providing more comprehensive services to the community and building a better society, while driving the sustainable development of TWGHs and living up to the Group’s reputation as Hong Kong’s most trustful and credible charity, the Board of Directors has formulated developmental strategies for the next five years.

The provision of free medical services for the needy has long been the prime objective of TWGHs. The Group will strive to sustain this fine tradition, and pay equal attention to the advancement of its medical and health services. The Board of Directors will continue to provide funding in support of free medical services and the various patient assistance programmes that enable those with financial difficulty to receive treatments and the acquisition of new technology and advanced medical equipment for better service quality. Besides, the Group will continue to take the lead in developing integrated Chinese and Western medicine services, training local Chinese medicine professionals and promoting academic exchange, and at the same time striving to open more Chinese medical clinics that specialise in integrated Chinese medicine services, so as to provide quality and efficient Chinese medicine services for the public.

To expand the scope of medical services for the elders, the Group will expand the TWGHs Outreaching Medical Services for Elderly and slate to establish a new integrated diagnostic and medical centres and a polyclinic on Hong Kong Island. Besides, Kwong Wah Hospital is under redevelopment to meet the trend of modern healthcare and service development. The Group will continue to closely work and cooperate with the Hospital Authority to strictly monitor the redevelopment project and ensure the structural safety of Tung Wah Museum.

On the education front, guided by the objective of an all-round education, TWGHs has been grooming talents for over a hundred years. The Group was allocated new premises for a primary school in Queen’s Hill of Fanling, for which the school construction project will be started shortly as funding from the government has been granted, and the premises are expected to be ready by 2021/2022 school year to cater for the demands for school places in Northern district. TWGHs Shui Chuen O Primary School was opened last year, and preparation for its permanent campus to be opened in the 2022/2023 school year is underway. In the meantime, the Group is also driving the development of a new school building for TWGHs Ko Ho Ning Memorial Primary School as well as for the enhancement of school facilities for TWGHs Lo Yu Chik Primary School. Besides, TWGHs Katherine Ma Kindergarten located at Yan Tin Estate in Tuen Mun will commence classes in May this year, providing quality early childhood education services.

TWGHs places a strong emphasis on teachers’ training, and will continue to organise cross-border learning activities aiming at promoting continuous professional development for teachers at various career phases and disciplines. In addition, the Group regularly organises thematic excursions and exchange programmes to build students’ global perspective. To help students to be well prepared for challenges ahead, the Group will continue to actively implement innovative curricula, such as STEM education, Life Planning Education and Tung Wah civic education.

Tung Wah College will continue providing excellent tertiary education to nurture students into learned professionals who contribute to society. The College is currently seeking space for the College’s physical expansion and improvement of its campus facilities, at the same time plans to launch new academic programmes, including management courses related to social and commercial enterprises to cater for the rapid development of these fields. As the Study Subsidy Scheme for Designated Professions/Sectors is incorporated in standard practice, the College’s subsidised places will increase to 510 in the 2019/2020 school year, which represents a growth of over 150%. In view of the abovementioned developments, the College has gained solid and sustainable growth in the aspects of student enrolment, school premises and curriculum, which paves its way to be recognised as a private university.

Dr. TSOI Wing Sing, Ken, the Chairman, continued, TWGHs has been providing a spectrum of quality social welfare services to all walks of life. To promote youth development in full force, the Group was allocated land from the government to build a Holistic Centre for Youth Development in San Po Kong, with an aim to provide young people with a full range of arts, cultural, events and services facilities. The Group will also continue to run the Youth Hostel Project on Hollywood Road in Sheung Wan. Besides, the Group is supporting the development of the first outdoor green village in Hong Kong, which will serve as an education ground for both the public and young people to experience an eco-friendly lifestyle.

In the area of elderly services, TWGHs has put strenuous efforts in providing professional and quality elderly and rehabilitative services in response to the growing needs of our ageing society. The Group is conducting feasibility studies on the reconstruction of Jockey Club Care and Attention Home and Pao Siu Loong Care and Attention Home, with the aim of increasing the supply of day-time services and residential places for the elderly and the disabled to mitigate the urgent demand for services. The Group is also working to develop services for the young old and to establish two service centres for them in the Central and Western District as well as in Kowloon respectively, helping them stay healthy both physically and mentally. Meanwhile, the Group has in place a diverse range of support services for dementia patients to improve their social and cognitive abilities, and is exploring to set up an innovative, boutique attention home and day care centre for dementia patients in the TWGHs Shuen Wan Complex for the Elderly to enhance their quality of life. Similarly, TWGHs spares no effort in driving rehabilitative services and empowering people in need. The Group will continue to give special care to people with disabilities through the provision of complete and continuous rehabilitation training services, in particular, the TWGHs Lok Kwan District Support Centre will set up a branch centre at Fu Tung Estate in Tung Chung, to help the disabled in the area integrate into the community. The Group will also consolidate and enhance our catering and food and beverage businesses, and raise its operational efficiency.

Dr. TSOI Wing Sing, Ken, the Chairman, said, over the years, TWGHs has played an important role as a pioneer and guardian of Hong Kong’s heritage and culture. In the coming year, the Group will further inject new impetus to traditional services and will actively participate in various community events such as Yau Ma Tei Festival, Heritage Vogue Hollywood Road and Tai Kok Tsui Temple Fair. The Group will also introduce brand new souvenirs for temples with the creative input of i-dArt, to preserve and rejuvenate the culture of traditional Chinese temples. In addition, the Group will collaborate with local and mainland organisations to compose books and publications on the Group’s historical events and in support of academic research.

Dr. TSOI Wing Sing, Ken, the Chairman, continued, in witness of the significant moment of the TWGHs’ 150th anniversary, the Group is planning a series of exciting festive events throughout the year 2020 to share the joy with members of the public. He sincerely hopes that past and present Boards of Directors, government departments as well as generous donors and partners will continue to support the long-standing charitable work of TWGHs to bring even more successes together going forward.

Since its establishment in 1870, TWGHs has been all along upholding its mission “To heal the sick and to relieve the distressed; to care for the elderly and to rehabilitate the disabled; to promote education and to nurture youngsters; and to raise the infants and to guide the children.” Nowadays, TWGHs is the largest charitable organisation with the longest history in Hong Kong. For over a hundred years, TWGHs’ medical and health, education and community services have developed rapidly to fulfill the needs of the society and to provide high quality services at low rates or for free. Today, TWGHs operates 339 services centres, including 5 hospitals and 34 Chinese and Western medicine services centres, 57 education services centres, 241 community services centres that cover elderly, youth and family, rehabilitation and traditional services, as well as the Tung Wah Museum and TWGHs Maisy Ho Archives and Relics Centre, which were established to promote, restore and preserve the heritage and relics of TWGHs, with an aim to protect and preserve local traditional culture.
