“As a charitable organization rooted in Hong Kong for 150 years, TWGHs is committed to keeping abreast of the changing needs of society and being innovative,” said Ms. Ginny MAN, the Chairman of TWGHs.  “This Event is one of our new initiatives to promote our anniversary theme, ‘For Charity, We Go Beyond’.  We are thankful for the unfailing support from Sotheby’s in generously helping organize the Exhibition and the Online Charity Auction for us, as well as providing the exhibition venue free of charge. “The Event has particularly adopted skateboard as the creative material, which brings charity, arts, street culture and auction together for the first time ever,” Mr. MA Ching Yeung, Philip, Organizing Committee Chairman of the Event cum TWGHs 2nd Vice-Chairman added. “Skateboard requires athletes to be determined, dare to challenges and never bow to defeat. These qualities indeed echo with the service pledge of TWGHs to the general public, that we are dedicated to strive for the best over 150 years by being innovative and introducing diversified services to meet the needs of the people from all walks of life.”

“It is our pleasure to present this online charity auction in support of Tung Wah Group of Hospitals on its 150th Anniversary,” said Mr. Kevin CHING, Chief Executive Officer of Sotheby’s Asia. “Sotheby’s is dedicated to cultivating the growth of the art market, and art education is a crucial foundation to the development of any individual as well as our society as a whole. Along with TWGHs, we are grateful to contribute to the local art ecosystem and support students in developing their artistic talents. How’s your day!?

by Joseph Wong

2020, Acrylic, Set of Three

In full support of TWGHs, Sotheby’s Hong Kong has invited renowned comic artist Professor Joseph Wong to create a set of three skateboard decks for this charity auction. “How’s your day!?” belongs to the “Implication” Series, which was launched to commemorate Joseph’s father, Alphonso Wong, after his passing in 2017. In Joseph’s eyes, his father was not only the Hong Kong’s most iconic comic book artist, but also a multi-talented man in music, sports and scriptwriting. The colorful palette of the work symbolizes his father’s very vibrant life, and at the same time incorporates the aesthetics of the father-and-son duo.

In Between Words

by Wong Ting-Fung

2020, Acrylic, Set of Three

Known for his eclectic style, Wong Ting-Fung is interested in incorporating illustration, graphic design and font into his works. Following his first collaboration with TWGHs last year, Wong has contributed two artworks for this event, namely Fallen Leaves Returning to Their Roots, a screenprint replica of the mural painting created in 2019 for the 120th anniversary of the Tung Wah Coffin Home, and In Between Words specially created for this event.

Depicting the full view of a luxuriant tree from the top crown to the roots underground, the Fallen Leaves Returning to Their Roots represents the journey of Chinese workers in the early years, who left their hometowns for overseas countries to seek job opportunities and fortune. Facing arduous challenges, many of them eventually lost their lives overseas. Tung Wah Coffin Home, based in Hong Kong as an entrepot, devoted huge effort to assist the deceased Chinese to return home through bone repatriation service, to fulfil the cultural legacy of “fallen leaves returning to the roots”. The original work was created in 2019 to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the Tung Wah Coffin Home and is now printed on the wall of Tung Wah Coffin Home. This skateboard deck is an authorized screenprint replica.

In Between Words demonstrates the artistic style of Wong Ting-Fung, which combines different media and brushstrokes to create a vibrant and intriguing work. In this painting, he adopted traditional Chinese calligraphy in expressing the Chinese characters of “Tung Wah”, using modern color-blocking structure to present “Hong Kong”, as well as coloured lines to illustrate the word “Benevolence” in an abstract way. The painting is finished with different strokes to represent different age sectors, echoing the dedication of TWGHs to serve the general public across time and sectors.

Da Jiu Festival by Lam Siu-Leung, TWGHs i-dArt artist 2020, acrylicDa Jiu Festival

by Lam Siu-Leung, TWGHs i-dArt artist

2020, acrylic

Launched in 2010, TWGHs i-dArt embraces a belief that art is a barrier-free common language. i-dArt aims to encourage more people with different abilities to participate in art to promote social inclusion.

Siu-Leung, with attention deficit disorder, has his own unique artistic expression. Whenever he paints, he will first locate a base point of the object he picks. Then his eyes and the brush will start to run: the eyes chase after the outline of the image and the brush will outline the trajectory he observes on another piece of paper. This is the reason why his works are always full of dynamic and power.

To vividly depict the Da Jiu Festival, Siu-Leung included the colourful floats in the parade, lion dance and the bun tower in his painting, sharing with viewers the happiness in this celebratory moment through his vivid and radiant composition.
